Bouncers with concealed handgun permits stop attack at nightclub

Another example from Michigan where a permit holder has stopped an attack:

Man killed in shootout with bouncers at Detroit club
Santiago Esparza / The Detroit News
DETROIT -- Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred this morning after a group of men were thrown out of Plan B nightclub at 205 W. Congress in downtown.
The men were causing a disturbance and were escorted out the rear of the club by three bouncers, said Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens-Bell.
One of the men in the group shot a bouncer in the back, Stephens-Bell said. Two other bouncers then pulled their guns and shot the man dead who had shot their co-worker, Stephens-Bell said.
The wounded bouncer was taken to an area hospital were he is listed in temporary serious condition.
Police did not release the identities of those involved in the incident.
The bouncers had permits to carry a concealed weapon.

John,

Did the Plan B nightclub bouncers fire in self-defense or will they instead be charge in the shooting? It appears that's what the Detroit police and prosecutor are now trying to determine according to this Free Press article:

1 dead, 1 injured in Detroit club shooting
http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080214/NEWS01/80214079/0/BUSINESS01

The two bouncers who fired their weapons are under arrest. The prosecutor had yet to determine charges, a Detroit Police spokeswoman said early this afternoon. The third bouncer is in the hospital in temporary-serious condition.

Dear Anonymous:

We will see what happens, but it is not unusual at all for cities to arrest those who use guns defensively and kill someone, nor is it surprising that they should do that until they have had a chance to investigate what happened. Given that there was a death involved, this is probably what they should do. I would be willing to bet that the odds are very low that these men will be charged with murder, and even if they are, I would bet that the jury is unlikely to share the prosecutor's perspective.
