NRA calls DC's new gun law 'a joke'

The Washington Times has this:

The D.C. Council will vote Tuesday on emergency legislation that will require handgun owners to keep their weapons disassembled or under lock and key in what gun rights advocates see as direct defiance of the Supreme Court ruling.

That ruling said the District could not bar residents from "rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of immediate self-defense."

Some interpreted that language at the time as prohibiting any requirement for gun locks. . . .

mike at ColdFury.com has a good idea: since it is so safe in DC, and guns that are disassembled and locked can be retrieved, assembled, and potentially used before a criminal can pull a trigger, or cut your throat, or clobber you with a rock or other blunt instrument - well, why not have the cops keep their guns, disassembled, in a gun safe at the precinct until needed? Think how many law-enforcement lives could be saved by keeping those dangerous guns away from those poor innocent officers!

Someone explain to me just how DC's proposed changes are any better than an outright ban on firearms. The hoops in place are so restrictive that they make a virtual ban. This accomplishes nothing. And NO ONE seems to know what is on the written test or at least no one has mentioned a concern over it. That test alone could be so convoluted that no one could pass it thereby making the applicant ineligible for owning a firearm. I cannot see, for the life of me, how this conforms to the spirit of the SCOTUS ruling on the Second Amendment case of Heller.

Oh, and I totally agree with John A.

Do the words, "Contempt of Court" still have any meaning? Hiz-lack-of-Honor the mayor, his city council and his attorney should spend some time amongst the unarmed criminal population in a jail, without their bodyguards...Of course it's safe, guns aren't allowed there!

The DC council has no intention of attempting to comply with the Heller ruling. The council is doing its dead-level best to circumvent the ruling.

The proposed laws are even more draconian that the ordinances that prompted the original lawsuit.

The argument has been made that a firearm may be reassembled and made ready for self defense in less than a minute. I challenge one of these people to hold his breath for a full minute while an acquaintance slowly ambles around his living room. This simple demonstration will prove that one has time to die several times within a sixty-second minute.
