A beautiful Volvo being destroyed under the "Cash for Clunkers" program

Will someone please explain to me how the country is wealthier with this type of destruction? The video can be seen here.

Of course, the government even has a 136 page booklet on how the cars should be destroyed.

To receive government reimbursement, auto dealers who offer rebates on new cars in exchange for so-called clunkers must agree to "kill" the old models, using a method the government outlines in great detail in its 136-page manual for dealers: Drain the engine of oil and replace it with two quarts of a sodium-silicate solution.

"The heat of the operating engine then dehydrates the solution leaving solid sodium silicate distributed throughout the engine's oiled surfaces and moving parts," says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration publication. "These solids quickly abrade the bearings causing the engine to seize while damaging the moving parts of the engine and coating all of the oil passages." . . .

I thought I read in your Fox article that cars valued at over $4,500 weren't eligible!?!

It seems to me this will primarily serve to drive the prices of used cars up, thereby hurting the poor.

Government price fixing, a subsidy to car makers just like the subsidies to ag producers. Because the unions (which is to say the real beneficiaries of car making) are very powerful. The rest of us get screwed.

I guess we know where to get spare parts for our beloved older vehicles...

It's a minimum wage program for the car industry.

Quite an excellent method to destroy an internal combustion motorcar.

All that is needed now, is to apply said method to politicians vehicles, and we could really save Billions by preventing idiots from passing bad laws.

Has any moron in Washington even considered the economic impact this will have on the Country? Used parts dealers go out of business. Salvage yards go under. Poor folks will have no transportation unless of course we the taxpayers underwrite the costs of newer vehicles for those who cannot afford them.

Isn't idealogy wonderful? Spew mental diarrhea all day long while ignoring reality, and you too can become President of the United States, or one of his pathetic minions. The pay and perks are great too!

This program is to do two things.

1) A job security program for the UAW.

2) Force public transportation on those that cannot afford a new car.

Typically, when #2 becomes reality, #1 will no longer matter. The UAW will go away because the auto manufacturers will be out of business.

So the UAW supports this job security program and they are shooting themselves in the foot. They will get what they deserve.

As an afterthought, one must ask where those who cannot unload there clunker are going to obtain good used parts at an affordable price now.

Poor folks will just end up paying retail for there parts now.

Either that, or they will just eliminate parts for older cars...

What a crime. That Volvo is a lot nicer than my 12 year old car (which doesn't qualify for the program-not that I have any interest in picking up a car payment). I'd have happily traded my car for that car and let them destroy mine.
