Remember how Arctic Ice was supposedly disappearing?

For some of the earlier debate, see this post by David Friedman.  I noticed this note at the National Weather service:

THIS HAS BEEN AN EXTREME WINTER FOR SEA ICE IN THE BERING SEA AND NOW
WE HAVE BROKEN THE RECORDS FOR MOST NUMBER OF DAYS WITH ICE AT BOTH
SAINT PAUL ISLAND AND SAINT GEORGE ISLAND.
Th discussion at the DSIDC changes daily so I took this screen shot:



The trend since the late 1970s is available here.  Given that global temperatures have been rising since that point it makes me wonder why they picked that starting date.  But in any case, since 2000, the level of Arctic sea ice has remained at about the same level.
